How the fence calculator works
Enter the total fence run and your target post spacing. The calculator rounds the number of fence sections up to the next whole section and adds one end post.
Formula
Sections = ceiling(fence length ÷ post spacing)
Posts = sections + 1
Example
For 100 ft of fence at 8 ft spacing: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, so you need 13 sections and 14 posts.
Assumptions and material notes
This estimate assumes a straight fence run with evenly spaced posts and no special corner, gate, terminal, or end-post requirements. Add posts for gates and changes in direction as needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator include gate posts?
No. Add posts required by your gate hardware and layout separately.
Why does the calculator round sections up?
You cannot install a fraction of a fence bay, so the run is divided into whole sections.
Can I use decimal measurements?
Yes. Decimal feet are accepted.
Should I allow for waste?
Yes. Posts, rails, boards, fasteners, and other materials may require extra quantity for cuts, damage, gates, and layout changes.
What about gates or unusual sections?
Measure gate openings and special sections separately and confirm the post layout before ordering materials.
