How the fence material calculator works
Enter the fence run, target post spacing, rails per section, picket dimensions, and a waste allowance. The calculator estimates a straight-run material takeoff for posts, rails, and pickets.
Formula
Sections = ceiling(fence length ÷ post spacing)
Posts = sections + 1
Rails = sections × rails per section
Pickets = ceiling(fence length × 12 ÷ (picket width + gap))
Example
For a 100 ft fence with 8 ft target spacing, 3 rails per section, 5.5 in pickets, a 0.125 in gap, and 10% waste, the calculator estimates 13 sections, 14 posts, 43 rails to order, and about 236 pickets to order.
Assumptions and material notes
This is a planning estimate for a straight run. Gates, corners, ends, terrain, board-on-board layouts, stock lengths, post sizes, and manufacturer requirements can change the actual material takeoff. Picket quantity assumes simple side-by-side coverage using the entered width plus gap.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include gate and corner posts?
No. Add special posts required by gates, corners, ends, and changes in direction separately.
Does the rail result account for stock lengths?
No. It estimates rail pieces by section. Stock length, cuts, splices, and waste should be checked before ordering.
How are pickets calculated?
The calculator divides the fence run by the combined picket width and gap, then applies the waste allowance.
Can I use board-on-board fencing?
Not directly. Overlapping boards have a smaller visible coverage than their physical width, so use the actual coverage method for that fence style.
Should I use a waste allowance?
Yes. Cuts, damage, layout changes, and material defects can increase the quantity needed.
