How the driveway gravel calculator works
Enter driveway length, width, depth, and estimated gravel density. The calculator estimates base volume, adds 10%, and converts weight to tons.
Formula
Base volume = length × width × depth in feet
Order volume = base volume × 1.10
Tons = order volume × density ÷ 2,000
Example
A 40 ft × 12 ft driveway at 4 inches deep is about 160 cubic feet before the allowance. At 105 lb/cu ft, the estimated order weight is about 9.24 tons.
Assumptions and material notes
Driveways often use multiple aggregate layers. This calculator treats the entered depth as one uniform layer. For a multi-layer driveway, calculate each layer separately and follow local construction recommendations.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include multiple driveway layers?
No. Enter each layer separately when different materials or depths are used.
What density should I use?
Use your supplier's published density when available.
Is 10% waste always enough?
No. Site conditions and grading can require a different allowance.
Can I use decimal depths?
Yes.
Should I calculate each driveway layer separately?
Yes. If your driveway uses multiple aggregate layers, calculate each layer separately using its own thickness and material density.
