How the gravel calculator works
Enter the area dimensions, depth, and an estimated gravel density. The calculator estimates volume, adds 10% for planning, and converts the result to tons.
Formula
Volume = length × width × depth in feet
Weight = order volume × density ÷ 2,000
Example
A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep is about 50 cubic feet before the planning allowance. At 105 lb/cu ft, the estimated order weight is about 2.89 tons.
Assumptions and material notes
Gravel density varies by rock type, grading, moisture, and supplier. Use the supplier's published density or weight-per-cubic-yard information when available.
Frequently asked questions
Why does density matter?
The same volume of different aggregates can have different weights.
Is 105 lb/cu ft universal?
No. It is only a default planning value. Replace it with your supplier's value when available.
Why include 10%?
It provides a simple allowance for minor variation and settlement; actual needs vary by project.
Can I enter decimals?
Yes.
Should I verify the gravel density?
Yes. Enter the density from your supplier or material specification when available because different aggregates have different weights.
