How to Calculate Mulch for a Garden Bed

Mulch estimates are based on the area you want to cover and the planned mulch depth. Calculate the volume first, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards if you are buying bulk mulch.

1. Measure the garden bed

Measure the bed length and average width. For an irregular bed, divide it into simple sections and calculate each section separately.

2. Choose the mulch depth

Use the planned depth for the new mulch layer. Keep the depth in a compatible unit with the length and width before calculating volume. If depth is in inches while length and width are in feet, divide the depth by 12.

3. Calculate cubic feet

For a rectangular area, use:

Volume = length × width × depth

For example, a 20 ft × 8 ft bed with 3 inches of mulch has a depth of 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.

20 × 8 × 0.25 = 40 cubic feet

4. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards

Bulk mulch is commonly sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.

40 ÷ 27 = about 1.48 cubic yards

If you include a 10% planning allowance:

40 × 1.10 ÷ 27 = about 1.63 cubic yards

5. Handle irregular beds

For curved or irregular planting beds, split the area into rectangles or other simple shapes that can be measured. Calculate each section and add the volumes. This is usually more practical than trying to measure one perfect average shape.

Common mistakes

Quick example

A 20 ft × 8 ft bed with 3 inches of mulch requires about 40 cubic feet before an allowance. With 10%, the estimate is 44 cubic feet, or about 1.63 cubic yards.

FAQ

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard of mulch?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

How do I convert mulch depth from inches to feet?

Divide the depth in inches by 12.

How much mulch do I need for an irregular bed?

Divide the bed into simpler measurable sections, calculate each section, and add the volumes.

Should I add extra mulch?

A planning allowance can account for measurement variation, settling, and waste. The appropriate amount depends on the project and supplier.

Can I use this method for several garden beds?

Yes. Calculate each bed separately and add the volumes, or enter the combined area when the beds have the same planned depth.
