How the mulch bag calculator works
Enter the bed dimensions, planned mulch depth, the volume of one bag, and a planning allowance. The calculator converts the required volume into cubic yards and whole bags.
Formula
Volume = length × width × depth in feet
Order volume = volume × (1 + waste percentage)
Bags = ceiling(order volume ÷ bag volume)
Example
For a 20 ft × 8 ft bed at 3 inches deep, a 2 cu ft bag, and 10% allowance, the estimate is 44.00 cu ft, about 1.63 yd³, or 22 bags.
Assumptions and material notes
Use the bag volume printed by the manufacturer. Coverage claims can vary by stated depth, so bag volume is the direct input here. Actual needs can vary with settling, spreading, irregular bed shapes, and site conditions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know the bag volume?
Check the product label or manufacturer information. Common bag sizes vary, so do not assume every mulch bag has the same volume.
Does this use the bag's coverage claim?
No. It uses the bag's stated cubic-foot volume. If a supplier only provides coverage at a specific depth, use that coverage carefully and consistently.
Why are bags rounded up?
You normally purchase whole bags, so the calculator rounds the required quantity up.
Should I add waste?
A planning allowance can account for settling, measurement differences, and material left during spreading. Choose an allowance appropriate to your project.
Can I use this for an irregular bed?
Divide the bed into simple measurable sections, calculate each section, and add the volumes before estimating bags.
