How the calculator works

Enter the rectangular project dimensions, the specified base depth, the bedding sand depth, and a planning allowance. The calculator keeps base aggregate and bedding sand as separate quantities.

Formula

Area = length × width
Layer volume = area × depth in feet
Order volume = layer volume × (1 + waste percentage)
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27

Example

For a 12 ft × 20 ft area with a 6 in base, 1 in bedding layer, and 10% allowance, the base is about 132.00 cubic feet (4.89 yd³) and the bedding material is about 22.00 cubic feet (0.81 yd³).

Assumptions and material notes

Use the base and bedding depths specified for your project and installation method. Required base depth can vary with soil, drainage, climate, and expected loads. This calculator estimates volume; compaction, grading, supplier packaging, and site conditions can affect the final order.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate the paver quantity?

No. Use the Paver Calculator for paver units.

Is 6 inches always the correct base depth?

No. Use the depth specified for your project and installation system rather than assuming one universal thickness.

Does the calculator include compaction?

No. The result is a planning volume. Compaction and supplier ordering requirements may change the amount purchased.

Should base and bedding sand be combined?

No. They are separate layers and should be estimated and ordered separately.

Can I use this for irregular areas?

Break the project into measurable sections, calculate each section separately, and add the results.
